Improve Your Musical Ability With Ear Training

If you want to truly succeed as a musician or singer then being able to recognize note intervals, chords and rhythms automatically by ear will be of tremendous benefit to you. This is a practice named ear training and is a skill that is relatively easily learned with the right training and some practice. In the early days ear training was available on tapes and CD's but the quality was questionable. Now you can find very high quality ear training programs on the Internet which will really help you at a reasonable price.

So what is ear training? The main aspect of ear training is mastering relative pitch. Having perfect pitch means that you can understand and automatically detect intervals between notes in music. A step on from this is learning the skill of perfect pitch. With this ability a musician can predict exactly how a note should sound in their head without actually hearing it. Quite a few musicians have this perfect pitch skill and with it they can identify all music types with absolute ease.

Conventional music training will encourage the trainee to learn how to read music and the technical skills required to play the instrument of their choice with no focus on ear training. This kind of approach is ill advised as it is critical for the budding musician to appreciate that with the correct ear training and mastering the sounds they are creating that they will become totally professional. It is a major disadvantage not being able to instantly recognize notes and intervals. A musician that has good ear training skills can pick up the instrument of their choice and immediately start playing with any group of musicians.

With good aural training you will be able to join another band with no problem or even decide to start your own band. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to understand and immediately respond to what your fellow band members are doing with their music. Knowing and understanding the key that the music is in and the chords that are being used will be easy for you with good aural training. This is the mark of a truly professional musician. While playing in a band it is incredibly important that you are in tune with the others and perfect pitch will enable you to know this.

Learning relative pitch is particularly important for singers as this enables them to sing the notes they are seeing with absolute accuracy. Great composers use their relative pitch training skills to create amazing music in the heads with harmonious melodies and rhythms and then write these down at a later date.

All of the top musicians have had good ear training and you need to acquire these skills if you want to get to the top as a professional musician. Learning to play music by ear is a life changing skill and you will be able to create amazing compositions in your mind and later play them out. In short, every musician no matter what instrument or input to music that they provide needs professional ear training to really take their musical skills to the next level.
