The MMORPG means Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play(ing) Game which is a game played in computers by thousands or millions of players from all the corners of the world.
In most MMORPGs the player takes the role of his or her own character and must navigate some sort of world or realm in order to complete quests and tasks. A website serves as the host of this world or realm, and players enters this existing world to act the roles they have chosen and pursue the tasks or quests that they have set for themselves. If one player is not playing, this virtual world will continue to exist with the presence of other active players. In effect, life in this world continues in the same way that life goes on in the real world.
For example, in World of Warcraft episode, a viral outbreak was caused by a spell that made players sick and infected all the other players. Players panicked and sought refuge in cities and towns as the disease ran rampant and seemingly out of control. Eventually, a safe haven was established and the problem was contained but the experience was an eye opener because of the realistic circumstances.
Most MMORPGs, such as World of Warcraft and Guildwars, are based in fantasy and myth and involve magic and spells. Some are based in space, where you must command a spacecraft or your own planet. There are also players who chose to be more down to earth, literally that is, with events happening in the real world that resemble or are patterned after real places and, perhaps to be more realistic, places that are familiar to some players.
MUDs or Multi-User Dungeons were the MMORPGs first games. Players play the game using commands to play their roles and do their thing in the make believe world, as well as to relate with the other players. Even in this early versions, 2D graphics and 3D MUDs are already available. The browser based MMORPGs are somewhat similar to MUDs, and are played only in the user's browser, e.g, RuneScape. They can be simple pages of text or complex 3D renderings and offer similar functionality of more developed MMORPGs, usually for free.
MMORPGs were virtually unknown a decade ago and now they are commonplace for most gamers. It is estimated that the MMORPGs are grossing in billions and the cash registers continues to be busy.
