Why Peter Andre Shouldn't Be Father Of The Year

In the quest for content, the inevitable lists have dropped on Father's Day. Websites are inevitably choosing to cover who they think are the year's best fathers. But there are no adequate conclusions to be drawn here, so the writers of these things run straight to the most idiotic answer: Peter 'Mysterious Girl' Andre. According to the wonderful people at UK hotel chain, Premier Inn anyway. David Beckham and Elton John were the unfortunates who missed out on the award, though don't ask them because they probably neither know or care.

This non-celebrity's celebrity trophy case has just doubled in size: he also won the award last year. And if his non-notoriety is an issue, calling his activities 'good parenting' is a far bigger one. Peter Andre stays in the public eye with his raft of reality show programming - we only know about his fatherly side because it's packaged up for us. It'll come as some surprise to most fathers that the definition of great parenting is found in a tub full of Alpha-H and in the cold hum of irrelevance that you find on ITV2.

Perhaps the day after Father's Day is also an appropriate time to question what manliness even is these days. The trend setters of global manliness (sportsmen, actors, err... astronauts) have long been seen endorsingMolton Brown skin care. Our strong, silent fathers are being replaced in the media by loud-mouthed sensitive types. This 'new man' has been a part of popular culture for about forty years, leading us to the logical conclusion that they're now the only men. 'New Man' is everywhere in the west, and he's here to stay.

There were other gaffes too this weekend. Google offended a large portion of its userbase by adding a reminder to 'call dad' to everyone's Google Calendar. Google: not everyone has a father in their life. Many are loved but missed. Others are unknown, and others are known and intensely regretted. Alone, unloved and unappreciated on Valentines Day? You wouldn't expect Google to remind you to 'buy her flowers'. This shows an ugly face of Google, one that no amount of Elemis could improve. Utterly unfeeling, the whole episode is completely insensitive. And the lack of social awareness is typically Google. People are already too sceptical of their social credentials to bother with the +1 button even.

Britains Most Written About Celebrities In 2011

Celebrities are getting more attention than ever before, but who are the most written about people of 2011? This guide looks at some of the most widely written about UK famous people of the year, starting with Cheryl Cole. Shes quite possibly one of the most famous faces in the country at the moment and it seems like she cant go anywhere without the paparazzi following her. Lately, the media has been following her X Factor saga and is now rather excited about what she intends to do next.

Kate and Pippa Middleton have also been prominently featured all over the media lately, although since she married Prince William (see below) on 29th April, we should probably refer to Kate as the Duchess of Cambridge, her official royal title. Both sisters are in the papers a lot but considering you might expect most of the attention to be on Kate, Pippa is also proving to be something of an allure to large sections of the press and has had lots of articles written about her.

As you might expect, sport is also a good place to go for gossip and this year Wayne Rooney has been one of the most talked about sportsmen. He has long been a popular subject for the media and this year has been no different. For instance, he recently made the decision to have a hair transplant because his teammates were reportedly teasing him about his hairline and he didnt like it. Much has been made of it in the press and the attention seems set to stay the same.

TVs Mr. Nasty, Simon Cowell, has also been filling the gossip columns with ink this year. He started the year with something of a drama over whether hed be judging the UK X Factor and then lately hes been in a bit of trouble for getting the above mentioned Cheryl Cole on the US version of the show only for her to be fired not long after. Simon Cowell has long been a presence in the media, but 2011 seems to have taken him to new heights.

Finally, we come to Prince William. As a prominent member of the royal family and a future monarch, he has long been a popular celebrity for the media to write about, but this year his fame has reached new heights as he married Catherine (Kate) in front of millions of people. He also frequently makes headlines in his role as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot and the work he does as a member of the royal family his star seems set to shine for ages yet.

The Specs Appeal Of The British C-List

In something of a new year support drive for the glasses industry, the London based College of Optometrists is issuing a series of polls clearly designed to make us all consider spending a little bit more on designer glasses to start up their year. The latest assault comes in the form of a poll on who the British public supposedly feels are the 'top ten celebrity glasses wearers'. However, even for the Brits who'll actually recognise this obscure list of names, you'll find the common thread between them completely obscure. Calling the list 'eclectic' would be a gross understatement. Jude Law in the same list as TV C-Listers Harry Hill and Philip Schofield?. At least we know the list is genuine. You couldn't make that stuff up.

The top two are predictable enough: Gok Wan tops the list. Gok is easily the most prominent glasses wearing person associated with fashion. Ever seen a picture of Gok without glasses? Didn't think so. So integral to his style are his thick rimmed, slim glasses that you wouldn't even expect him to up his cool in Oakley sunglasses. Second on the list is Johnny Depp. Is Johnny Depp someone renowned for being a glasses wearer? Perhaps, but he's more likely on the list simply as a regular feature of 'sexiest celebrities' lists.

Exhausted of inspiration, the list just starts getting bizarre. Alan Carr is third because you remember him with glasses, if you remember him at all. Again, I ask, what is the list measuring? Are ladies and gentlemen seeking out partners who have got the 'Alan Carr look' down? Really now? Ditto the aforementioned Harry Hill and Phillip Schofield. As for the inclusion of stylish women, the list is limited to Anne Robinson alone. Sure, this isn't a Prescription sunglasses list, so glasses wearing women we associate with stylish shades aren't going to get in. But even in windswept Britain, a 'top ten glasses wearers' list that doesn't include Tina Fey is an abomination.
