The Specs Appeal Of The British C-List

In something of a new year support drive for the glasses industry, the London based College of Optometrists is issuing a series of polls clearly designed to make us all consider spending a little bit more on designer glasses to start up their year. The latest assault comes in the form of a poll on who the British public supposedly feels are the 'top ten celebrity glasses wearers'. However, even for the Brits who'll actually recognise this obscure list of names, you'll find the common thread between them completely obscure. Calling the list 'eclectic' would be a gross understatement. Jude Law in the same list as TV C-Listers Harry Hill and Philip Schofield?. At least we know the list is genuine. You couldn't make that stuff up.

The top two are predictable enough: Gok Wan tops the list. Gok is easily the most prominent glasses wearing person associated with fashion. Ever seen a picture of Gok without glasses? Didn't think so. So integral to his style are his thick rimmed, slim glasses that you wouldn't even expect him to up his cool in Oakley sunglasses. Second on the list is Johnny Depp. Is Johnny Depp someone renowned for being a glasses wearer? Perhaps, but he's more likely on the list simply as a regular feature of 'sexiest celebrities' lists.

Exhausted of inspiration, the list just starts getting bizarre. Alan Carr is third because you remember him with glasses, if you remember him at all. Again, I ask, what is the list measuring? Are ladies and gentlemen seeking out partners who have got the 'Alan Carr look' down? Really now? Ditto the aforementioned Harry Hill and Phillip Schofield. As for the inclusion of stylish women, the list is limited to Anne Robinson alone. Sure, this isn't a Prescription sunglasses list, so glasses wearing women we associate with stylish shades aren't going to get in. But even in windswept Britain, a 'top ten glasses wearers' list that doesn't include Tina Fey is an abomination.
