Your First Night in Minecraft

Minecraft would actually work really well as part of the Nintendo 3DS repertoire (although perhaps not so much for the Xbox Kinect). If you are brave and true you will embark upon Normal mode straight off the bat (no pansy Peaceful for you); however, despite your inherent bravery you may want a few pointers to avoid the potential destruction of your base (and yourself). So relax, keep a torch close by and let us follow the example of our good (and mining expert) friends the dwarves: strike the earth (just think of doing that with a Kinect; the RSI would be excrutiating)!

Have a good look at the place where you first appear. This is your spawn point. If you get the materials you'll be able to make yourself a compass, which will lead you back here if you happen to get lost (this is quite easy to do if you stray too far). If you die you respawn here; note that having to run an incredibly long distance between your spawn point and where you died may result in you losing all your dropped items due to despawning.

Getting your hands on some wood (see what I did there?) should be the first thing you do. "Mine" away a tree trunk (and collect the saplings that fall from the decaying leaves if you want) and convert it into to planks; four of these make a workbench, an essential construction for any Minecraft player. Using the remaining planks make yourself some tools; axes and picks are most useful at this stage. Aim to acquire cobblestone for sturdier constructions, coal for torches and iron for better tools. However, whether you find the resources you need any time soon is entirely a matter of chance.

By night time you need somewhere to hide out safely. Whether it's a small house (raising these slightly is a good plan, but be careful who can climb up) or a humble hole in the ground, make sure you're safely sealed away in order to prevent mishaps. You really don't want a creeper to the face, after all.
