Everything is online now, you get your car insurance quotes online, you communicate with friends online, check what your local restaurant is serving at the weekend, and so much more, all online. Now gaming is increasingly going online too, and not just with PCs either which were the traditional medium people played games online through, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 just wouldn't be the same without their online capabilities.
Consoles are still limited though, to get the most out of online gaming then you need to try MMORPGs which are role playing games on a mass scale and allow for truly epic character development and exploration. Two of the most popular games in that genre are EVE Online and World of Warcraft, let's look at each in turn now.
EVE Online is a massive game based in the future where we can all fly our own starships around and the whole game takes place in one massive universe that all players are on simultaneously (most games split people off onto different servers to save the load on their equipment). You can decide to stick to the premade missions and just do the missions given to you by the factions, or you can go off and start a transport empire or a trading empire, even start your own corporation, or just become an outlaw and prey on other players! Another popular thing to do is to move up as a miner and eventually get a huge mining ship so you can go out and strip mine all the precious asteroids out there lying around in space, but be careful of those pirates. Or you can work your way up to the huge battleships and join in epic battles instead.
World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG at the moment, and it does give you less freedom, but because of that it is more accessible for people too. The idea is that you start at level 1 with your character and you gradually level up to level 85 and gain access to better areas and equipment, plus you can level up different professions as you go. The whole aim of the game is basically to get the most powerful character and equipment that you can, to complete quests, and to fight in dungeons and arenas either with your friends, guild mates or even just groups of random people the game finds for you. There are great guides available to help you level quickly, like the one mentioned in this Zygor Guide review.
Both of these games will give you hundreds of hours of enjoyment, and the best thing is that each will offer you a 14 day free trial too, so you can see if you like them before you commit any money to them!
