Is Tekken the Best Beat 'Em Up Ever?

The last decade has seen a variety of awesome fighting games. From Mortal Kombat to the most recent episode in the Soul Calibur series, we've been spoilt for choice. Whether you favour fists or weapons, feet or fire, there's probably a character in a fighting game out there who's your perfect match. But what are all these games about? Which is the biggest and best of the lot? See below to find out.

Mortal Kombat

1992 first saw this fatality-toting bad boy appear on our screens, Mortal Kombat has been well known (some might say perhaps too well) for its gory visuals and use of realistic digitised sprites. 2011 will see the release of the ninth title in the series. Simply named Mortal Kombat (as, of course, was the very first game), the entire game has been a huge system and graphical overhaul. Die hard fans will be pleased to know that pre ordering the game from Game Stop will result in the unlocking of the "Klassic" Scorpion playable character skin and iconic fatality.

Soul Calibur

Having started out as the humble Soul Blade (or Soul Edge outside Australia, North America and Europe) in 1996, the Soul series has lent its name to spin offs and sequels alike. Pretty much the best fighting game featuring weapons today, it is still one of the most purchased PS3 games to date. With interesting, well designed characters and fighting styles to suit every play style and ability level, it's hard not to enjoy Soul Calibur.

Tekken

Having been around since 1994, the Tekken series has been going strong for some years now. With those involved in the tournament either competing for ownership of the Mishima Zaibatsu or simply attempting to be crowned the King of the Iron Fist, there's a lot for them to win. With somewhat of a soap opera formed by the Mishima family's ongoing antics (they really don't get on well with each other, do they?), it's hard not to feel compelled to follow the story (as well as beat people up, of course).
